World’s First! CNBM Sets New Industry Standard for Carbon Reduction, Sequestration and Management

On September 19, 2022, Zhou Yuxian, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of CNBM and Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of China National Building Material Company Limited, attended the commissioning ceremony of the second phase of photovoltaic cell packaging materials and carbon dioxide capture and purification project of CNBM (Hefei) New Energy held in Hefei and announced the launch of the project.

This project is the world’s first model project with CO2 capture and purification in glass furnace. This means the first time for Triumph Science & Technology, a company of CNBM, to apply the self-developed glass-furnace-powered CO2 capture and purification technology in a glass production line following its launch of the world’s largest oxy-fuel-powered photovoltaic glass production line, filling the industry gap and creating a “first in both China and the world” in the photovoltaic glass industry once again.

The project is digitalized, intelligent and green, with a production capacity of 50,000 tons of liquid carbon dioxide per year. For the first time, it employs the innovative process of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) coupled to distillation, taking 35% of carbon dioxide concentration in glass furnace flue gas as raw material, which is then made into liquid carbon dioxide with 99.99% purity through flue gas treatment, carbon dioxide capture, compression, distillation and liquefaction. The quality of the resulting product reaches the national food grade standard. The formal operation of the project will help CNBM to build an integrated green industry chain featuring “building materials +” across the life cycle, to create a model of carbon reduction, sequestration and management in the global glass industry, and to contribute to China’s strategic goals for “carbon neutrality”.
